IV

When you lose an eye, then you can lose the other,

Like Louis Braille, by ‘sympathetic ophthalmia’.

It doesn’t happen often. But you lose a dimension,

As my love discovered, hanging out the washing

On a line that felt uncertain, flat, and vague.

After that, I did it. Sympathy’s mutual.

I hung the washing on a line that wavered.

That was as nothing to my love’s nightmare –

Hanging washing on a line that wasn’t there.

The Monocle of Professor J. Norton-Smith

In that grey, black-flecked tweed suit of yours,

A monocle looked almost appropriate –

A portliness of eye that matched the waistcoat

And went with your moustache and pukka voice.
